We all live in a world overloaded with images. Using photography, installation, and video, I present ambiguous, but familiar environments that ask viewers to be both present in the moment as well as reminisce in memory. My work pulls from family and childhood images as aesthetic resources to readdress these undefined, documented moments. I photograph childhood photos of myself and my family, honing in on awkward interactions and touch. Using overlapping video I touch on the impact of technology, and the monotony of existence, and explore what it's like to come of age in the 21st century.
Being born into the boom of technology, I grew up looking at myself and others through a screen. It all looks familiar in the images remaining but indistinct and I can never entirely understand why these points in time were saved in the first place. We all bear witness to monotonous, fleeting moments but I want to take time to pause and embrace them. I want to explore and recognize why we document and how images have an impact on how we remember. I create art of this moment, of the next moment, art of the past moment, and where they all come to meet. |
